This past weekend saw some shakeup at the top of the Men’s basketball polls. Indiana and Louisville lost enabling the Duke Blue Devils and the Michigan Wolverines to regain their positions as number 1 and number 2, respectively.

Amazon’s missed expectations were blamed on lackluster sales of video games and supply issues due to the flooding in Thailand.  The bad news didn’t end there, as the company also warned that it could lose money in the current quarter, estimating a range between $100 million in operating income and a $200 million loss.  Amazon’s disappointing results came right after a similar miss from Google.

Amazon’s chief executive, Jeff Bezos, explained in a recent interview, “We’d rather have a very large customer base and low margins than a smaller customer base and higher margins.”  The company’s margins declined for four quarters before rebounding in the fourth quarter.  Amazon Kindle sales were up 177% from the fourth quarter of 2010.  Amazon’s chief financial officer, Tom Szkutak, said in a conference call, “We were very pleased with the great growth we had.”

Senior technology analyst for BGC Financial Colin Gillis said, “With the valuation Amazon is carrying, you got to perform.  You’ve got to be like Apple, smash through the numbers people are afraid even to whisper.  Instead, they’re only making slightly over a penny on every dollar in revenue.  That’s pathetic in any industry.”  Scott Devitt of Morgan Stanley was more optimistic, saying that “The long-term story is very much intact,” although he noted that investors might not be buying the stock for the next couple of quarters.

Amazon.com created an uproar last December by encouraging customers to use a price-checking app while in local stores and then search Amazon when they got home to find a better deal.  Booksellers were particularly offended and some companies began promoting a “buy local” movement.  Amazon is also struggling under increased costs for warehouses and a lot of warehouse workers to deliver all of their merchandise to the masses.
