The Stig’s helmet is taken off
The secret identity of the Stig is out. Top Gear’s mystery man – and yes, it is a man – is race car driver Ben Collins.
The Stig plays the silent, fearless test driver of Top Gear’s glamorous cars.
The final revelation came from HarperCollins, who are publishing a book revealing the Stig’s identity.
BBC, which produces Top Gear, had sought an injuction to block the publication of the book but was refused on Wednesday.
HarperCollins calls it a “victory for freedom of speech”. The book will be published in the UK on 16 September.
But the BBC says the judgement does not prevent them from taking the issue further in the courts. “The BBC will not be deterred from protecting such information from attack no matter when or by whom it should arise.”
A favourite pastime
The Stig’s identity has been one of BBC’s most intriguing secrets. Fans have made a pastime out of trying to guess his identity.
Collins is in fact not the first person to wear the Stig’s helmet. The first one was Perry McCarthy, who left the show in 2003 after his identity was revealed.
With this latest revelation, a spokesperson for Top Gear says the producers have yet to decide whether the Stig will be back next season.
